Serge Luten Muscs Koublai Khan New Review

 

A while back, Serge Lutens did some rearranging with packaging. For some reason that means that chances are that the perfume is going to be reformulated. I had to hop on over to TPC to get a small decant to check (Ciel gratto bottle).

I will admit that I do love musk in perfume. Musk can add depth and richness to a perfume. I love vintage BaV, Kiehl's Original Musk and don't wear them too often. Sometimes musk can go sideways for me like it did with Amouage Gold Woman.

I never had gotten around to getting a bottle of Muscs Koublai Khan while I could and now it's gotten out of my price range but honestly, I am okay with that; considering how large my collection is already but onto the review.

While I do have a couple older decants and have worn them off and on for the past few years, my latest yet smallest decant it the most recent. I've noticed that MKK is a more sheer, less slutty and not as long lasting. MKK is still pretty slutty but it's quieter and doesn't seem to last as long on skin but still the same perfume to my nose. But I don't love this reformulation to get a bottle.

What Not to Wear Out of the House

I have some good news, the bottle of Arabie that I thought was lost has been found. Somehow, Arabie ended up is a random toiletries basket. I'm blaming the puppy and her learning how to counter surf and then my mother throwing it in that basket. The vintage bottle of L'Heure Bleue has arrived and I am ecstatic. I haven't spent a whole lot of time with it, except for gazing at the bottle marveling on how small a 1.6 ounce bottle of EDC is.

I have compiled a list of perfumes that I can only wear alone. I think that every perfumista has a handful of perfumes that they only wear when they are alone in the house. Those perfumes can be too skanky or there is something about them that renders them not fit for public.

Amouage Gold for men and women: I honestly don't thing that it's the structure of the perfumes themselves but I think that it's the whopping dose of civet (or is it ambergris?) that makes this too poopy. The men's version has a whole lot less going on and I am more apt to wear the men's version then the women's

Patou Joy: I have yet to try the extrait version of Joy, so I can't comment on it. I have the EDP version and I do love Joy. I love how the jasmine and rose play well together. The rose and jasmine is bright, not at all powdery and don't compete with each other. But Joy has a noticeable cat pee type of note that I think that the jasmine probably creates.

Serge Lutens Muscs Koublai Khan: What seems to be the musks to end all musks. I personally love it but while people like it on me, they just simply don't like the perfume itself. So it's regulated for the alone pile. But it's not the sluttiest perfume I own and that's vintage Bal a Versailles and I wear it out of the house and everyone swoons.

A Five Day Deal

Here in America, there are only about three more days until we celebrate Thanksgiving. Since I work in a bakery, I do not see any kind of day off until Thanksgiving. So instead of picking out a different perfume to wear for each day, I've decided to wear Chanel no 5 EDT or EDP to wear until Thursday. Then on Thanksgiving, I will be wearing something else. I don't know what but I'll probably be figuring it out before I have to go to a relatives house. But for some reason, I'm already weary of wearing no 5 in EDT form. I think it's the whole 5 day stretch that's getting to me, well, the idea of the whole thing. I'm wondering if I should switch over to Lolita Lempicka.

But I did have a nice little surprise, perfume wise a few days ago. Before bed on Wednesday, I had forgotten that I was wearing Bal in PdT form, I sprayed Muscs Koublai Khan on my wrists. Bal was starting to get into the dry down phase but I've done questionable things with perfume before but this turned out really good. Both vintage Bal and MKK are slutty in their own way and Bal depending on the concentration, can be even sluttier than MKK. But this combination is just wow, it smells really good. Maybe not something I could wear in a tight space but if I were at an outdoor function, it would be great. There is so much slut note that I will wear in public. I'm not overly brave yet to have anything really sensual perfume wise.

My bathroom/kitchen remodeling saga continues. A new contractor was hired and I now have one of my bathrooms done, except for a face plate for the light switches and an door for the bathroom. So I now get my bathroom back, mostly. I am not some of the people in my household that can use the bathroom to either take a shower or do my business with the door open. As soon as I can, I will be putting the door up so I can do my thing without an audience. I'm strange that way.

One of Those

Did you ever go through your decant collection to find multiple decants of the same perfume? It maybe one of those that you got way back when and tried once, maybe got it when you were starting out with perfumes. Then comes the wanting to use up decants and then you find way too many multiples. It can be a little funny to find that I've got 2 decants or more of certain things. But when I take into account that some of them are vintage or can't get them here in the US, it's not too bad.

After rooting around my decant pile, I found, not one but two fairly large Muscs Koublai Khan decants. MKK is one of those polarizing perfumes that I can never make up my mind about and I'm one of those who loves skank in perfume. On one hand, I do love it but the people in my house hate it because it smells like I've been sleeping around all weekend and never bothered to shower. All I'm getting is clean skin that's been warmed by the sun and some clean sweat. And due to the fact that maybe they are smelling something, I am not, I really can't make a fair judgement on it. So, I don't wear it or when I do remember to wear it, I make sure that I'm alone in the house and not going anywhere.

Serge Lutens Muscs Koublai Khan Review

For the longest time, I have been afraid of any perfume that has been described as animalistic and or skanky. Reason being that I don't want to smell like I haven't taken a bath in a few days. I have read a lot of mixed reviews of Serge Lutens's Muscs Koublai Khan. Some said that there was a huge fecal note or barn yard element. After ditching some of my fear, I ordered a 2.5 ml decant from The Perfumed Court. And for the past 2 weeks, I've been afraid of trying it out. But yesterday afternoon, I was in a mad dash to meet a friend, so this was the first thing I grabbed and sprayed on. I don't find it to be dirty or animalistic. I find it to be more of a sensual perfume. Sensual as in one is not afraid of being a sensual person. I find that MKK is a little dirty because it doesn't fit into the mold of squeaky-clean category.

MKK is kind of a mellow perfume that doesn't really announce itself, someone has to be close to you to really smell MKK. I was a little disappointed in they staying power of MKK because after 5 hours, I couldn't smell it on myself. I kind of expect that out of an eau de toilette but not an eau de parfum. Is it full bottle worthy for me? I find it decant worthy so far, but I am undecided on if it truly is bottle worthy.
